First Christian Church has a long history of service and outreach to the local community and the world.  We support a wide variety of ministries, both through our gifts of financial aid and hands-on work.  From providing sleeping quarters for the military during World War II to funding classroom equipment in Darfur, from supplying clothing for orphans in the Republic of Georgia to our present-day help with local children, we have found ways in which to help where the need is the greatest.

DISCIPLES MISSION FUND
Throughout the years, we have supported the various special offerings that support the ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Among those are the special offerings for Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  In addition to these, we support the work of Week of Compassion through donations to be used in their response to emergencies (such as hurricane, earthquake and flood relief) around the world.

ADOPT - A - SCHOOL
For more than ten years, we have "adopted" DeLong Elementary School.  Our church family donates school supplies in September for students who cannot afford the many things needed for school.  We have had "Kleenex Sunday", and hundreds of boxes of tissues are given to the school to be used in the classrooms so teachers do not have to purchase them.  We also give "care packages" to the teachers and staff members at the school at different times of the year to show them that they are appreciated.

KIDREACH TUTORING PROGRAM
We are one of the site locations for the KidReach Tutoring Program, sponsored by World Vision, a one-on-one tutoring program for elementary school children who need extra help in math and reading.  Our tutors work with students from DeLong Elementary School after school one day a week; one tutor is assigned to one student for the year.  This allows a relationship of trust and understanding to develop which helps the students in their ability to learn.

NATIVITY HOUSE
For the past few years, we have been engaged in a ministry with Nativity House, a drop-in center for the homeless in the community; meals are provided as well as giving them a safe place to visit during the day.  Our people volunteer one Saturday morning a month at Nativity House (usually sorting the clothing that has been donated).  In addition to that, our Giving Tree at Christmas has been used to provide new items for the guests of Nativity House.  It is an important ministry to those in our community who be otherwise ignored.

H.U.G.S. FOR THE HOMELESS
Once a year, we receive donations for our H.U.G.S. (hats, underwear, gloves, socks) for the Homeless.  New items of clothing are donated during the cold winter months when the need is the greatest for those who live on the streets.

OTHER SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
In addition to these, there are other opportunities in the community in which members of First Christian Church participate.  We support, through financial aid and hands-on assistance, the projects of Habitat for Humanity.  We sponsor teams for both the Pierce County Hunger Walk (to help the hungry of Tacoma and around the world) and the Relay for Life (to help fund research to find a cure for cancer).
