Tacoma's First Christian Church dates back 124 years to 1884.  This congregation is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), an American church with origins in the frontier in the 19th century.  Our purpose, as defined in the By-Laws of First Christian Church, is "the preparation of each member for their task of sharing the good news of God's love in Christ.  We, therefore, provide worship and fellowship where ALL persons are accepted with their needs; where they are nurtured in Christian love; where they are challenged with the lure of the Christian way; and where they are challenged to give practical witness and service in the name of Christ wherever their lives are lived."

During much of its long life, First Christian was located in downtown Tacoma.  It was a neighborhood church with locations at 13th and Fawcett Streets and at 6th and K Streets.  Population changed and, in 1961, it relocated to its current location on the corner of 6th and Orchard Streets, in the rapidly growing area of Tacoma's west end.  The church buildings are surrounded by residential homes, apartments, and businesses.  There is considerable excitement at this time about the prospects of updating, remodeling and adding to the current facilities.

Throughout the years, First Christian Church has had a ministry of hospitality.  It is known to be a very welcoming church for all people.  It is a diverse congregation with people who have been members for seventy years and those who have only recently been attending.  From long-time Tacoma residents to the transient military families stationed at local bases, all have been accepted and found a special place in the church family.

Another of the ministries that has been present throughout the years is the strong music ministry.  Music is a large part of both of our weekly worship services and the  musicians who share their talents are truly gifted and bring us into the presence of God with their spiritually enriching and uplifting music.

The one thing that has characterized this congregation through its years is its deep commitment to outreach, both locally and globally involving both financial support and "hands-on" experience.  First Christian Church has been an active presence in the faith community of Tacoma throughout its history.  From its beginning in 1884, with its 24 charter members, it has continued to grow and change, with its ministries adapting to the needs of the day.  In 2008, First Christian Church of Tacoma is still a church relevant to its times and making a significant difference in the community and its people.
